How to turn on the magnet

The HERA-B dipole magnet is treated like a machine magnet. Consequently the magnet is switched on and off by the HERA shift crew.

How to know that the magnet is on and ready

For the time being, we don't have any information on the magnet. You have to call the HERA control room, Tel. 3700.

How to handle technical problems

Three different interlocks have to be set up before the magnet can be switched on.
  1. The interlock of the HERA-B experiment has to be set up.
  2. The rightmost slow control rack in our control room houses a panel for the magnet. There is a switch called "Freigabe HERA-B Magnet" which has to be on (1). The corresponding key can be found in the adjacent key box.

  4. The cooling water as well as several temperatures within the magnet are checked. They are read out by a SPS providing a technische Freigabe. After a controlled access, power failure etc. it is very likely that the SPS has to be reset. There are two possibilities to do this:

  5. a) Press the red button (control panel in 913) called "Reset HERA-B Magnet" if it is illuminated. As a result, the green light indicating the interlock should go on (see upper picture).
    b) Go to room 201, rack 20. Press the red button called Reset. As a result, one yellow LED on the right hand side of the SPS should be turned on; it is labelled "Freigabe HSP", which means Hauptspule=main coil (see lower picture). In this case you are a clever guy and you are allowed to continue your shift work.
